Monday Night Comedy Every Monday it’s "Laughter in Leimert Park", the Renown Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center boasts an unforgettable line-up of nationally known comedians from HBO, BET, Comedy Central, ABC, NBC, Showtime, FOX and Starz weekly. The laughter starts at 8:oo pm with this hysterical show hosted by Ramona Stephens and produced by Lady Tuezdae. First Wednesday’s Blues and Jazz Poetic Cafe A new monthly event in the heart of LA’s historic Leimert Park at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center featuring blues and jazz poets, writers, musicians, singers/songwriters. Award winning Jerzy George Kossek, blues personality - poet, singer, and promoter, hosts the show carrying interviews on the artists’ couch, illustrating how words and music collide. Lots of cool vibes, great jazz and blues poetry, lyrics and music. Open Mic for poets and lyricist. Fundraiser for Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center to create a better space.
“I Wanna be Loved" The Stories of Dinah Washington Barbara Morrison relives the stories of the music legend Dinah Washington in an excellently staged performance piece written by Michael Cornier and Ms. Morrison. Backed by the excellent Jimmy McConnell and his 18-piece orchestra, Barbara Morrison embodies the mood and sensibilities of the great Dinah Washington. The show continues to impress audiences and critics alike with its uniquely crafted presentation paying tribute to Dinah Washington, and proving “What a Diff’rence a Day Made.”
First Thursday Blues This monthly Barbara Morrison blues concert features great local players and vocalists. First Thursday Blues events showcase different Los Angeles area blues bands each month, with an emphasis on straight ahead blues of all regional styles. An open jam follows the concert performance. Held at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center, the venue features a large stage with outstanding sound and lighting in a concert-like setting.
"Walking in Dorothy Dandridge Shoes" Wanda Ray Willis portrays a joyful Dorothy Dandridge on the last full day of her life, September 7, 1965. She dances sings and enacts her life in timeline-like fashion whilst sorting her gowns, scripts and sheet music as she packs for her travels to fulfill her contracts for two films, and performing engagements in New York and Las Vegas. The solo musical, written by, choreographed, set designed by Wanda, has piano accompinament by H.B. Barnum or Melvin B King and Dorothy's Societal and Industry achievements are highlighted "History of Women in Jazz" California Jazz & Blues Museum Hall of Fame Inductee, Sweet Baby J’ai presents a musical journey from the beginning of recorded music to present day. “The History of Women in Blues” inspires and delights – from Da’ Blues and the rise of the Harlem Renaissance to the turbulence of the sixties and beyond, this tribute to some of the most influential singers in blues and jazz builds understanding and appreciation for the history and culture of the female experience in American music. The Los Angeles Times referred to Sweet Baby J’ai as, "Swinging, powerful, and haunting.” Boston Globe describe the show as, "History, theater and song, from a voice reminiscent of the Great Sarah Vaughan. Sweet Baby J'ai's tribute is a show you don't want to miss!"
